Early Years

Green Street, Oldham, Lancashire, early 1960's

I can still walk down this street, in my mind. It was called Green St.  It is full of memories of when I was a small child. I used to live at the far end of the terrace, in the shadow. All these buildings have gone now. The first street leading off to the right, at the bottom of the picture, was flat and tarmaced, and our playground. We used to call it on't top, which I suppose was the highest street, in our little territory. Here we would play rounders, British bulldogs, cricket, football, marbles, swapping comics, skipping and in Spring we would skip the may-pole, yeah boys and girls! There was often between ten and twenty of us children, 'playing out' at one time, as we called playing freely outside in the fresh air for most of the day.
